TMG Transitions Customized Leader Performance Improvement System for North Florida Shipyards

Training Modernization Group, Inc. (TMG) announces the completion of its availability-focused leader development program for North Florida Ship Yards (NFSY) at its Mayport, Florida facility. The program has been transitioned to Company staff to continue use and application in its ongoing leader development initiatives.

In November 2009, the leadership team of North Florida Ship Yards (NFSY) recognized disconcerting workforce and production trends with serious impacts for the future of its business, including decreased production quality, increased employee disengagement and poor leader performance. After a detailed analysis, the executive management team made a commitment to design, build, pilot, and implement a system to attack these trends.  Within 4 months, the company developed a synchronized and integrated Leader Performance Improvement and Development System which was piloted on the USS Roberts availability. Components of this system included a Core Skills Training Program that provided leaders with an in-depth understanding of how the organization conducts business and their unique responsibilities, Team Building Workshops creating a collaborative learning event directly tied to a critical area of work on the USS Roberts, and Focused Coaching Events matching high performing leaders with developing leaders needing focused help in a specific area. Through careful, measured program management, the previously identified negative trends have reversed and organizational performance continues to improve.

As a result of the performance improvement intervention, significant improvement has been measured on 5 key metrics established as critical performance indicators important to both the organization and its customer. Milestone Completion (a measure of whether contractual milestones are met) increased 100% compared to pre-project average. The amount of Corrective Action Requests (issued by the customer to highlight poor performance) reduced by 40% compared to the number of average CARs received on work done to previous vessels. Also, the time in days to submit growth work pricing, an important measure of how quickly an organization can request changes to contractual work items, improved by 40% compared to the average amount of time such submissions required prior to the implementation of this program. The team is on-track to continue that trend.  According to North Florida Shipyards CFO, Mr. Robert Wilson, "we are well on our way to building a Lean, Mean, and Winning Team."
